Pro tip
Speaking more than one language is a real strength in customer-facing roles. List each language with your level, for example “Spanish (fluent)”.
Profile summary example
Keep it to 2-3 short sentences: your role and experience, your main tools or strengths, and a recent result.
Example
Sales associate with 2 years of retail experience in a busy clothing store. Builds rapport quickly, explains products clearly, and helps customers find the right fit. Regularly meets weekly sales goals and keeps accurate POS and cash records.
Replace the details with your own experience. Keep every claim true.
Example bullets: before and after
Pattern to follow
Action verb + what you did + tools or context + result with a number.

After

Before
Worked the cash register.
After
Processed cash and card payments on Square POS with accurate end-of-shift cash counts.

Numbers in these examples are illustrative. Always use your own real results.
Copy the pattern, not the numbersUse these examples as a pattern. Swap in your own tools, numbers and results, and only include what is true.
Resume template and format
Use a clean, single-column layout with standard section headings so both recruiters and ATS can read it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Listing duties only (“worked register”).
- No numbers (goals, customers per shift, sign-ups).
- An unprofessional email address.
- A long resume for an entry-level role – one page is enough.
- Leaving out language skills.
Tips for non-native English speakers
Use short, repeatable bullet shapes. Fill in the brackets with your own details:
- Customer bulletHelped [N] customers per [shift/day] with [products/questions]; result: [sales/feedback].
- Sales bulletMet [X%] of weekly sales goals by [action].
- Operations bulletHandled [cash/inventory/displays] accurately; [result, e.g. passed audits].
Language tip
Use simple past-tense verbs for past roles and present tense for your current role. Avoid idioms and long sentences; one idea per bullet is easier to read.
FAQ
I have no sales experience. What should I include?
Include customer-facing work, volunteering, or school activities where you helped people, handled money, or worked in a team.
Should I list languages I speak?
Yes. Speaking more than one language can help you serve more customers. List each language with your level.
Do I need a summary for a retail job?
A short summary is helpful, especially for a first job. Two sentences about your strengths and availability are enough.
Keep building your resume
Use the examples above as patterns, then put in your own tools, numbers and results. Only include what is true, and read it aloud before you send it.
